Destined to become a defining song in their catalog, “Appalachian Raised” is the first new release from Cigarettes @ Sunset since making their Lost Highway debut in March with Possum Rock — a six-song EP named after their self-coined term for their viscerally charged mix of Americana, indie-rock, and Appalachian folk. In a landmark moment for the band — Garrett Dellinger (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), Wells Whitman (bass, backing vocals), Ethan Moore (drums), Sarah Vann (violin, vocals), and Ryland Bagbey (lead guitar) — “Appalachian Raised” distills their bittersweet love for their home into a galvanizing anthem of hard-won resilience.

“‘Appalachian Raised’ is dedicated to our hometown of Boone and the surrounding hollers where we grew up,” says Dellinger. “This song is a reflection of our lives here in western North Carolina, and a celebration of coming home and learning to embrace where we come from instead of running from it.”

A longtime fan favorite thanks to their explosive live show, “Appalachian Raised” spotlights Cigarettes @ Sunset’s raw yet poignant storytelling, presenting a true-to-life portrait of Appalachia and the people who inhabit it. Produced by Taylor Kimball (Wyatt Flores, Koe Wetzel), “Appalachian Raised” magnifies its mood of strangely thrilling melancholy with Vann’s soulful violin melodies and the band’s hard-driving rhythms. At turns nostalgic and devastating and gloriously life-affirming, the result is an unforgettable triumph from a fiercely original new force in Americana.

Directed by Will Allen, the video for “Appalachian Raised” expands the song’s wildly colorful rendering of their native region, capturing Cigarettes @ Sunset as they perform the track in a wide-open field with the Blue Ridge Mountains stretching across the horizon.

Tonight at the O2 Academy Leeds in Leeds, U.K., Cigarettes @ Sunset will kick off a UK/IE tour as support for Rainbow Kitten Surprise. After returning to the U.S. in June, they’ll hit the road with their repeat tourmates Dexter and The Moonrocks and take the stage at major festivals like Summerfest in Milwaukee (on June 20) and Master Musicians Festival in Somerset, Kentucky (on July 18). In addition to supporting Rainbow Kitten Surprise on the North American leg of their tour this summer and fall, Cigarettes @ Sunset will head to Australia for the Strummingbird Festival (October 17 and 18). Formed in 2021 in the small Appalachian town of Boone, Cigarettes @ Sunset found their sense of purpose profoundly altered by Hurricane Helene in 2024 — a turn of events that significantly impacted their hometown and reinforced their commitment to making music that connects and endures. To that end, the band thrives on delivering a combustible live show that provides plenty of shared catharsis.
